president pro tem
president pro tem or president pro tempore,
a United States senator who is elected by members of the Senate to act as temporary president in the absence of the Vice-President, who is the permanent president of the Senate. The president pro tem is a member of the majority party and he is fourth in the line of succession to the Presidency, after the Speaker of the House and the Vice-President.
